Pipe Majors Corner - May 2009

Pipe Major Folks
As we enter the winter months, the priorities for me are:
(i) getting the new tunes/medleys up and running;
(ii) fund raising for the Aussie Champs next year in Brisbane; and
(iii) seeking to attract more learners through a program of playing at more community events.

Of course we can't succeed at any of these things if we don't all play our part and put our shoulders to the wheel. So whether you are a Band player or a supporter, I urge you all to pitch in and help where you can. You might not be able to contribute to all three, but your best efforts in those areas where you can help would be much appreciated. Learners, dollars and tackling new tunes are all fundamental things in keeping the Band healthy and progressive.
Cheers

Australian Pipe Band College

Newsletter A couple of things have been put in place recently to assist bands and pipers around the country. One is the freely accessible website www.schoolofpiping.com

This has articles, product reviews, historical material, and audio lessons in place.
The other is "The Complete Pipers Handbook", which is the most comprehensive book on the set up, maintenance, refinement and performance on the bagpipe ever written.

Described as "mandatory for the serious piper"! It is a full colour publication with photographs to guide every step of each process. Neither of these projects are a commercial venture.

The book is expected to fund the website at some stage in the future. Providing details of the website to your members will no doubt be of significant benefit to them.

I hope also that they may avail themselves of the publication which is available via the website and from various stockists also listed on the site.

Pipe Majors Corner - February 2009

Pipe Major Welcome back everyone to 2009 - I trust you all had a great Christmas and new year and are refreshed for another busy Band year. In terms of the program for this year, for me the priority things are:
(i) learn new tunes and get two new medleys underway;
(ii) ramp up our fund raising efforts;
(iii) the Band to work more closely with the College to recruit new learners - I feel uncomfortable about our future when we have so few learners; and
(iv) explore opportunities to bring some new players to the Band, including from overseas.
And for me there is always the perennial - to keep challenging you to get better and hopefully surprise your-self with how much you are able to improve! And I don't exclude myself from that either. I've decided 2009 is a year when I'm going to try and lift my standard and knowledge - I've been cruising for too long and that is dangerous! So more practice for the PM!!!

Cheers
Athol

Player Profile - Alaine Cole

Player Profile Name: ALAINE COLE
Nic Name: I haven't had a consistent nick name. 'Lainey' or 'Lainey chops' have been the most common. 'Wind-mill' by one of Dad's shearers when I was little, and of course I've had 'The Black Douglas' although that is perhaps a little irrelevant now.
